When living in Thailand it is typical to be exposed to the typical flavors of North Eastern regions of the country. Given food is cheap, delicious, and remarkably easy to make accounts to the availability of this food from street corners to well-known restaurants. This dish takes one of the well known dishes of the North Eastern region and turns it to a crispy appetizer that exudes fantastic flavors.
This dish can normally be found in restaurants or pubs across Thailand and is called Laab Moo Tod (ลาบหมูทอด) , translates into Fried Pork Laab, Laab being the famously known north eastern dish.
Details to the construction of the dish are as follows:
Main Ingredients
- 300 grams minced pork
- 1 Tbsp dried red chili flakes
- 2 Tbsps ground roasted rice
- 3 Tbsps flour (preferably flour specifically for frying)
- 1-2 stalks green onion (chopped)
- 2 stalks of culantro
- 5-6 pcs shallots (sliced)
- 5 petals kaffir lime leaf (chopped)
- 1 bottle soybean oil
Seasoning Ingredients
- 2 1/2 Tbsp Fish Sauce
- 2 1/2 Tbsp Lime Juice (Freshly squeezed)
- 1 tsp granulated sugar
Creating your Dish
- In a mixing bowl add minced pork with ingredients of chopped herbs and seasoning
- Once all ingredients are incorporated, add flour and mix thoroughly
- Let the mixture rest for approximately 15 minutes to enable absorbtion of flavors
- With your hands roll the mixture into smooth shaped balls, about 1 inch in diameter
- Heat frying oil (soybean oil) to medium-high heat in a wok and gently add pork mixture in
- Cook until golden brown then remove from oil and set onto paper towels
- Plate the fried meatballs onto a plate and enjoy.
